Stomach acid is highly corrosive, so in theory, if it comes into contact with acid-sensitive materials like fabric or clothes, it could create holes.

A healthy person’s stomach acid typically has a pH level between 1 and 2.5.

The primary function of stomach acid is to activate digestive enzymes, such as pepsin, and create an acidic environment for breaking down protein-rich foods like meat. Its strong acidity also helps kill or inhibit harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, reducing the risk of infection. Additionally, stomach acid aids in the absorption of essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12. It also supports overall digestion, ensuring that food is properly broken down in the stomach before being absorbed in the small intestine.

Despite its strong corrosive properties, stomach acid does not harm the stomach lining because the cells in the stomach wall produce a protective mucus layer. However, certain factors can damage this protective barrier, including excessive acid production, medications, irregular eating habits, poor lifestyle choices, stress, or Helicobacter pylori infection.

People with digestive issues may have a higher stomach pH, meaning their stomach acid is actually less acidic.
